What is Instacart? Instacart is a grocery delivery service. Basically, a customer chooses a store, selects items, chooses a delivery time, and places the order. Instacart then sends the order to a shopper who will go to the designated store to shop for the items.
This is a great system for people who can’t or don’t want to go grocery shipping, but it’s also an amazing opportunity to make some money.
Why work for Instacart?
You get to work on your own schedule. If you need flexibility or just want to be able to choose when you want to work, their scheduling is great. They let you choose the days and times that you want to work every week. Not all the times are always available, but new times tend to open up as people drop their hours.
There’s no hour requirement. You can work as much or as little as you want without worrying about getting cut. Whether you’re in it to make a little extra cash or to work full time, you get to choose how much you want to work.
Get paid for sitting around. A lot of the time, you will be sitting around waiting for orders. Sometimes, orders don’t come for hours, even on “hot” order days. This might not be ideal for people who like to be kept busy. However, the good thing is that Instacart has a $12/hr guarantee. That means you get paid even when you’re not doing anything at all. What other company is willing to do that?
Direct deposits into your account every Tuesday night. No matter how much or how little you worked during the week, Instacart will make a direct deposit into your account. They are very punctual with their deposits, so there are no worries about when the money is coming in.
Requirements to work for Instacart
Be 18 or older (21+ for alcoholic orders)
Have access to a car
Have a smartphone
How do I get started?
In order to start working for Instacart, you have to go through their application process. Start by clicking here and be sure to enter my referral code: QNGUYEN39134.
After completing the application, Instacart requires all applicants to complete a small series of training videos and attend an in-person training session. The training session varies based on the trainer, but the basic gist is they make you do a demo order where you run around and shop for the items. Then, you take your basket back to the trainer and they go over your results. After that, you put all the items back and they assign you a “marqueta” which is their company card.
Making money with Instacart
After being activated on the platform, you can start making money! Simply get on the app, pick up shifts, and start shopping! Instacart pays anywhere from $10-$11 per order plus 100% of the tips. If you don’t make at least $12/hr, Instacart will make up the difference.
Each week, shoppers with ratings in the top 25% of their region get a $100 bonus. However, you have to complete at least 20 deliveries in order to qualify. This can prove to be difficult because that means if you work 5 days a week, you have to complete at least 4 orders per day. On my 8 hour shifts, the most I’ve delivered a day is 3 orders.
You can also make money for referring shoppers. The bonuses vary by each area, but Instacart promises at least $25 per referral.
Tips for Instacart shoppers
Choose the area where your house lies in. That way, if you get long hours of no orders, you can just do whatever else you need to do instead of being out on the street. Sometimes, when I have an early shift, I tend to wait until I get an order to get ready.
Don’t waste your money on an insulated bag. Instacart requires you to have one, but the truth is you really don’t need it. Driving distances are rarely ever long enough for items to need insulation unless you are carrying bags of ice, which won’t fit in most insulated bags anyway.
You can buy grocery bags! I spent the first week of being a shopper carrying items in my reusable grocery bag until I found out that I could buy grocery bags. It’s much easier to carry larger orders when you have multiple bags.
Don’t trust the list order on the app too much. It’s a helpful guide, but I’ve learned that it almost always either lists items in the wrong sections or makes you walk back and forth a lot. Make sure to scan the items to make sure you’re getting the most out of your aisle.
Are you going to try being an Instacart shopper? Let me know how it goes! Are you in it for a bit of extra cash or as a full time job? If you’re already an Instacart shopper, are there any tips you want to give for newbies and other shoppers?
