The perfect dish for garlic and meat lovers. This is how I make the perfect steak!

You'll Need...

  • 4 lbs sirloin steak (try to have it at room temperature)
  • 4 tbsp avocado oil
  • Sea salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • For the garlic butter
  • 1 stick organic unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup dried parsley flakes
  • 2 tbsp dried basil leaves
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper

Directions

  1. For the garlic butter:Combine butter, parsley, basil, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
  2. Transfer mixture to sheet of foil. Make sure all sides of butter are evenly coated in other ingredients. Then, roll into a log.
  3. For the steak:Place a medium-sized pan on medium-high heat.
  4. Wash and dry both sides of steak. Then, drizzle with avocado oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. Place steak into the middle of the pan and let cook for 1 minute.
  6. Flip steak and cook for another minute.
  7. Tilt the pan away from you so that the oil and juices run down to one side. Use it to sear the edges of the steak until they are colored like the rest of the meat.
  8. Lower heat to medium. Continue flipping steak in 1 minute intervals until desired wellness is reached, about 4-5 times for medium rare.
  9. Add desired amount of garlic butter into the pan. Let it melt completely into the pan.
  10. Flip steak about 2-3 more times to let it soak in the butter.
  11. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes.
  12. You're done! Enjoy your perfect steak!

Additional Notes

I like to plate it with all of the oil, butter, and juices from the pan, but it's up to your personal preference.

Make Your Own Simple Syrup

Simple Syrup

In my obsession with making boba drinks, I have discovered a magical ingredient called simple syrup. Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made of equal parts sugar dissolved in equal parts water. I use it to sweeten my teas, but you can also use it to make cocktails or even in food. It mixes in really well so you don’t have to deal with grains of sugar that refuse to dissolve.

Most boba shops use high fructose corn syrup as a liquid sweetener in their drinks, which is notorious for being all kinds of bad for you. Simple syrup is a healthy alternative, especially since you will know exactly what is going in it when you make it yourself. The best thing about it is that you can make it with any kind of sugar you want. I typically use turbinado cane sugar but go ahead ad use whatever sugar you prefer.

Everybody has their own preferences on the ingredients they use. If you want to know what I use in my kitchen, you can get the ingredients here.

Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 8 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Organic Turbinado Cane Sugar or sugar of your choice
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a saucepan

  2. Heat mixture over medium-high heat

  3. Stir constantly until sugar is completely dissolved in the water

  4. Remove from heat and let cool completely before storing in a tightly sealed jar. Store in the fridge.

Recipe Notes

The longer you boil your mixture, the thicker it becomes. Unless you want a thicker syrup, try not to let it boil for too long.

Make Extra Cash With Instacart

What is Instacart? Instacart is a grocery delivery service. Basically, a customer chooses a store, selects items, chooses a delivery time, and places the order. Instacart then sends the order to a shopper who will go to the designated store to shop for the items.

This is a great system for people who can’t or don’t want to go grocery shipping, but it’s also an amazing opportunity to make some money.

Why work for Instacart?

You get to work on your own schedule. If you need flexibility or just want to be able to choose when you want to work, their scheduling is great. They let you choose the days and times that you want to work every week. Not all the times are always available, but new times tend to open up as people drop their hours.

There’s no hour requirement. You can work as much or as little as you want without worrying about getting cut. Whether you’re in it to make a little extra cash or to work full time, you get to choose how much you want to work.

Get paid for sitting around. A lot of the time, you will be sitting around waiting for orders. Sometimes, orders don’t come for hours, even on “hot” order days. This might not be ideal for people who like to be kept busy. However, the good thing is that Instacart has a $12/hr guarantee. That means you get paid even when you’re not doing anything at all. What other company is willing to do that?

Direct deposits into your account every Tuesday night. No matter how much or how little you worked during the week, Instacart will make a direct deposit into your account. They are very punctual with their deposits, so there are no worries about when the money is coming in.

Requirements to work for Instacart

  • Be 18 or older (21+ for alcoholic orders)
  • Have access to a car
  • Have a smartphone

How do I get started?

In order to start working for Instacart, you have to go through their application process. Start by clicking here and be sure to enter my referral code: QNGUYEN39134.

After completing the application, Instacart requires all applicants to complete a small series of training videos and attend an in-person training session. The training session varies based on the trainer, but the basic gist is they make you do a demo order where you run around and shop for the items. Then, you take your basket back to the trainer and they go over your results. After that, you put all the items back and they assign you a “marqueta” which is their company card.

Making money with Instacart

After being activated on the platform, you can start making money! Simply get on the app, pick up shifts, and start shopping! Instacart pays anywhere from $10-$11 per order plus 100% of the tips. If you don’t make at least $12/hr, Instacart will make up the difference.

Each week, shoppers with ratings in the top 25% of their region get a $100 bonus. However, you have to complete at least 20 deliveries in order to qualify. This can prove to be difficult because that means if you work 5 days a week, you have to complete at least 4 orders per day. On my 8 hour shifts, the most I’ve delivered a day is 3 orders.

You can also make money for referring shoppers. The bonuses vary by each area, but Instacart promises at least $25 per referral.

Tips for Instacart shoppers

Choose the area where your house lies in. That way, if you get long hours of no orders, you can just do whatever else you need to do instead of being out on the street. Sometimes, when I have an early shift, I tend to wait until I get an order to get ready.

Don’t waste your money on an insulated bag. Instacart requires you to have one, but the truth is you really don’t need it. Driving distances are rarely ever long enough for items to need insulation unless you are carrying bags of ice, which won’t fit in most insulated bags anyway.

You can buy grocery bags! I spent the first week of being a shopper carrying items in my reusable grocery bag until I found out that I could buy grocery bags. It’s much easier to carry larger orders when you have multiple bags.

Don’t trust the list order on the app too much. It’s a helpful guide, but I’ve learned that it almost always either lists items in the wrong sections or makes you walk back and forth a lot. Make sure to scan the items to make sure you’re getting the most out of your aisle.

Are you going to try being an Instacart shopper? Let me know how it goes! Are you in it for a bit of extra cash or as a full time job? If you’re already an Instacart shopper, are there any tips you want to give for newbies and other shoppers?

Easy Ways to Make Extra Money

We all want to make more money, but most of us don’t want to work for it. Thankfully, there are ways out there to make some extra cash without a lot of work! Most of them barely even require thinking and you can start on them pretty quickly. Let’s check them out.

Disclaimer: This post contains some affiliate links and I may earn referral rewards if you use the link to sign up.

  1. Scan your receipts
Did you know that there are companies out there that will pay you for scanning your receipts? If you go grocery shopping often, you can make some extra cash very quickly from this. You can even take it a step further and scan receipts from your parents or significant other as well. Since I deliver groceries, I scan the receipts from my grocery orders. Here are a few apps that will pay you to scan your receipts:
    iBotta
    Receipt Hog (wait list)

    Checkout 51
  2. Share your usage data with a research panel
This one literally requires no thinking whatsoever. All you have to do is sign up for Google Screenwise/Cross Media Panel, install the browser app, and start making money. You can earn from $1-$3 a week, depending on how many devices you have set up with your account. You can also earn a $6 sign up bonus if you set up 3 devices. It’s not a lot of money and you can only redeem gift cards, but who else is going to pay you for doing nothing?
  3. Open a bank account
There are banks out there that will actually pay you to open a bank account! Of course, there are certain requirements that you have to meet, but they’re not difficult. Here are some banks that will pay you to open an account with them:

How to Make Sea Salt/Sea Cream

Sea salt/sea cream drinks are super popular here in Southern California. There are so many places that sell these drinks. You can get them from 85C Bakery, 7 Leaves, and Fusion Tea Bar, just to name a few. My problem is that although it is relatively cheap to get these drinks, they don’t last me the whole day to fully satisfy my cravings and the little amounts of money add up. So here I am making my own drinks at home! I am obsessed with Fusion Tea Bar’s white rose cream tea and while I don’t know how to make that yet, I can show you how to make the simpler sea salt drinks.

Let’s get started.

Ingredients:
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 tsp sea salt

Directions:
1. Combine the ingredients into a bowl (you can also use a mixer)
2. Whip for about 5-7 minutes. The consistency should be comparable to shampoo. If it is too runny, you need to whip it more. I suggest whipping for an extra 2 minutes at a time until consistency is right.

That’s it! It’s so easy to make. You can basically add this to any drink of your choice now. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different drinks!
